2012 International Stroke Conference

Matthew Cowperthwaite, PhD, Director of Research at NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare has been invited to speak at the 2012 International Stroke Conference poster session in New Orleans next February. His topic will be an overview of a recent NeuroTexas Institute study, “Quantifying the Contribution of Risk Factors for Ischemic Stroke in Patients with a History of TIA”, written in collaboration with Dr. Mark Burnett, Executive Medical Director of NeuroTexas Institute and NTI Research Scientist, Duncan Ramsey.

The study concluded that cardiovascular comorbidities and diabetes mellitus are associated with significantly greater risk for a stroke readmission within 30-days of a TIA. This result highlights the need for identifying at-risk individuals based on the profile of their comorbidities when assigning care after a TIA event.
