AUSTIN, Texas—NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare will be hosting ten University of Texas at Austin undergraduate biomedical engineering students that were selected to participate in its newly-developed summer internship program. The students will take part in an interactive learning venture, gaining first-hand exposure to many of the clinical technologies available at St. David’s Medical Center and the Heart Hospital of Austin.

“This program represents an opportunity for educational synergy between a nationally-recognized provider of neurosurgical services and one of the nation’s finest institutions of higher education,” Kit Fox, M.D., neurosurgeon and executive medical director of NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare, said. “By participating in this internship program, these students will be exposed to a range of concentrated, meaningful experiences in the medical field, and it will provide a dedicated forum for research project identification and involvement.”

The internship will focus on exposing students to research opportunities in various areas of medicine, including neurosciences. The goals are (i) to provide students with early exposure to the medical sciences through first-hand access to clinical resources, (ii) to provide students with a unique opportunity to apply their engineering expertise to study clinical processes, and (iii) to offer research opportunities for students with NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare.

The students were independently chosen by professors and academic advisors at The University of Texas at Austin through a highly-selective admissions process. The program will begin on July 12, 2010 and will run through July 30th At the end of the program, students will present their research projects to hospital physicians, staff and UT professors.
