Research study to identify genetic markers associated with susceptibility of Phantom Limb Pain

7/28/2010 3:00:38 PM

It has been estimated that approximately 50 – 80% of amputees experience phantom limb pain (PLP), which causes significant medical problems and marked reduction in quality of life. The current treatment options for amputee patients are limited.

Researchers at NeuroTexas Institute are implementing a study to determine whether there are genetic markers associated with an individual’s susceptibility for chronic PLP following a limb amputation. To date, no study has comprehensively studied the genetic basis of PLP, but expectation is high for the discovery of genes, and their associated biological pathways, that would further our understanding of this condition and potentially provide new directions for more effective therapies for this patient population.

The study seeks to enroll 100 patients in the Central Texas area and will be open to any patient recently undergoing amputation surgery. Stay tuned for details about how to enroll in this exciting research study.
